In 2006, John Faso was the Republican Party candidate for governor of New York. He lost to Democrat Eliot Spitzer, the crusading, former state attorney general.
Of course, Spitzer resigned from office in March 2008 due to a prostitution scandal. Nonetheless, after the November elections, the Democrats now have complete control of state government in New York for the first time in 70 years.

Governor David Paterson today presented his budget proposal for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. The plan includes cuts, reductions in growth, and mergers for many programs, reductions in the state workforce, and a $4 billion package of new taxes and fees to help close a deficit that has ballooned to $15 billion.
The Governor announced his budget proposal five weeks ahead of the constitutional deadline in the hopes that negotiations with the Legislature will begin early and a final budget can be adopted one month ahead of the April 1st deadline, saving the state $1.3 billion.
